About UsFaculty of Postgraduate Medicine under KGUMSB is Bhutan’s first and only Faculty in Postgraduate Medicine.
The Faculty was initially established as Postgraduate Medical Education Centre (PGMEC) in the year 2014 and formally inaugurated as Faculty of Postgraduate Medicine on May 14, 2016 by Honorable Health Minister Lyponpo Tandin Wangchuk. It was established to oversee the conduct of the Postgraduate Medical Education Programmes.
The Faculty of Postgraduate Medicine is currently headed by third Dean, Dr. Guru Prasad Dhakal.
The faculty offers postgraduate Course as MD (Doctorate of Medicine). As of now, the Faculty has 69 residents enrolled from 2019 till 2022 in the 12 disciplines. The courses offered currently are MD courses in Anesthesiology, Dermatology, General Practice, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatrics, Otorhinolaryngology(ENT), Psychiatry and General Surgery. We provide various MD Programs
MD Anesthesiology Health care has improved considerably in Bhutan during the last 10 years. But there is a considerable shortage of health care providers in many specialties throughout Bhutan. To improve access to surgical services and critical care additional anesthesiologists are needed. Anesthesia care services are required to expand surgical and obstetric services not only in Thimphu but in many of the regional hospitals in Bhutan.
MD Emergency Medicine
As a mountainous country with significant and gradually improving transportation needs, the establishment of Emergency Medicine Centers within Bhutan is critical to improving access to appropriate medical care. Recently established at JDWNRH, Emergency Medicine, through the formation of this residency program will gradually be able to spread to the regional referral hospitals to allow for timely necessary medical care. The graduates of the Emergency Medicine Residency will be able to help better establish Emergency Medicine as a specialty within Bhutan and help proliferate an improved level of medical care.
MD General Practice
The postgraduate training in General Practice will be a time limited phase of training under supervision leading to recognized and competent General Practitioners. The eligibility to sit the entrance examination requires candidates to have a recognized MBBS, to have completed the internship and to have at least one year of experience in working in a health Centre.
MD General Surgery
The mission of the Surgery Residency Program is to ensure that all surgical residents possess sound knowledge, skills and experience through uniform high quality training to enable them to be competent surgeons providing the highest level of quality care in Bhutan.
MD Internal Medicine
The goal of our programme is to assist residents in developing the competencies necessary to become outstanding comprehensive internists, capable of managing diverse patients with a broad range of diseases. The six Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education(ACGME) Core Competencies are Practice-Based Learning and Improvement; Patient Care and Procedural Skills; Systems-Based Practice; Medical Knowledge; Interpersonal and Communication Skills; and Professionalism. MD Obstetrics and Gynecology
The Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology contains a structured educational experience, planned in continuity with undergraduate and continuing medical education in the specialty areas.
An ophthalmologist is a doctor of medicine (MD or equivalent degree) who specializes in the eye and visual system. As a licensed medical doctor, the ophthalmologist’s ethical and legal responsibilities include the care of individuals and populations suffering from diseases of the eye and visual system.
MD Orthopedic Surgery
The mission of the Orthopedic Residency Program is to ensure that all Orthopedic residents possess sound knowledge, skills and experience through uniform high quality training to enable them to be competent Orthopedic surgeons providing the highest level of quality care in Bhutan at par with the international standard.
MD Otorhinolaryngology (ENT)
The residency programme in ENT aims to produce enough otorhinolaryngologist in our country so that we can ensure our patients receive tertiary otolaryngological care without any language barrier and also without draining the finances of our country. As we grow, we also intend to train foreign students in our country so our country can earn some money and help in realizing the government’s aim of making our country an education hub in the south east Asia.
The mission of the Pediatric Residency Program is to ensure that all pediatric residents possess sound knowledge, skills and experience through uniform high quality training to enable them to be competent pediatricians providing the highest level of quality care in Bhutan.
Psychiatry as a specialty deals people with mental illnesses. It entails the assessment, diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders. The patients are treated on the basis of bio-psycho-social model. The psychiatrist, in accordance with his medical profession, occupies a central position in a multidisciplinary team whose members contribute their special competences to the common goal.
